How to become a stenographer in government departments?  Know educational qualification, selection process and other information

 To become a stenographer, a candidate is required to have knowledge of stenography which includes shorthand (a method of writing at a fast speed with different types of symbols), typing in English and Hindi or other regional languages (as per the requirement of the concerned department).  .

 To become a successful stenographer, it is very important to have a good command over the grammar of the language in which the candidate wants to become.

 Stenographer recruitment comes out from time to time in various ministries and institutions.  Apart from government departments, there is good demand for stenographers in private sector also.

 Stenographers working in various departments also have to handle the confidential records of that office/institution.  Therefore, apart from the required skills and educational qualifications, credibility and trustworthiness are some of the qualities that a successful stenographer must possess.  The post of Stenographer is quite challenging and it also offers a good package.

Educational Qualification for Stenographer :

 To become a stenographer, it is necessary to have 10+2 pass and diploma/certificate in stenography.  Candidates must have stenography skill test, minimum typing speed of 25 words per minute and shorthand speed of 80 words per minute.  To become an English language stenographer, one should have a typing speed of 30 words per minute and a minimum shorthand speed of 100 words per minute.  The required educational qualification may also be different in some departments.

Age limit to become a stenographer :

 Generally, the minimum age limit to become a stenographer is 18 years and maximum 25 years.  However, as per government rules, relaxation in upper age limit is also given.

 Selection process to become a stenographer

 The selection process for Stenographer includes computer/written examination and skill test.

 Computer Based/Written Examination :

 Candidates have to go through a written examination which includes questions from General Knowledge, General English, Hindi, General Mathematics and Reasoning.  Candidates can prepare for these questions with a variety of practice tests available online.

skill test :

 Under Skill Test, the ability of the candidates to take dictation, transcription and typing skills are tested.  Candidates have to demonstrate 100 wpm in English/Hindi for Stenographer Grade C and 100 wpm for Stenographer Grade D posts.  The matter of dictation has to be transcribed on the computer.  The timings prescribed for transcription are as follows-

 For Stenographer Grade D: 50 minutes in English, 65 minutes in Hindi

 For Stenographer Grade C: 40 minutes in English, 55 minutes in Hindi

 Stenographer salary :

 In government departments, stenographers get salary as per pay-band 1 i.e. Rs.5200-20200 and Rs.2600 grade pay.  According to this, the starting salary is around Rs.30,000 per person.  Grade pay may vary from organization to organization.
